PLAYHOUSE
Sydney —
Australian indie-pop singer-songwriter and producer Gordi – aka Sophie Payten – returns to the Sydney Opera House for a magnetic, one-night-only performance in the Playhouse on Friday 17 October, celebrating the release of her long-awaited new album Like Plasticine.
Gordi last performed at the Opera House for Vivid LIVE 2022, following her globally streamed From Our House to Yours show in 2020 – a powerful international album launch for Our Two Skins filmed during lockdown while live venues were shuttered.
Gordi said: “Last time I launched an album in the Sydney Opera House - I played to no one. Well, no one physically in the room, just the whole internet in the middle of deep lockdowns in 2020. I am flooded with excitement to play my first full-band show in Sydney celebrating the release of my new record, Like Plasticine, at the Sydney Opera House in October. Come if you want to dance and cry at the same time.”
With Like Plasticine, her third studio album, Gordi offers a deeply personal reflection on years of transformation – from coming out and reimagining her future, to working on the frontline as a doctor during the pandemic. Her dual life – balancing the clinical detachment needed of a healthcare professional and the emotional candour of songwriting – lies at the heart of the album. Embracing what she calls “the ecstasy and agony of change,” Like Plasticine captures the beauty and heartbreak of reshaping one’s life in real time. Gordi’s musical versatility and open, disarming presence have made her a sought-after collaborator across genres, working with the likes of Troye Sivan, Bon Iver, Anaïs Mitchell, Julien Baker and more.
Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, said: “Welcoming back one of Australia’s most impressive singer-songwriters is a full-circle moment. Gordi’s ability to channel life’s chaos and beauty with poetic depth and resilience is remarkable, and her transformative new album captures that tension with striking clarity. To experience it live, alongside fan favourites, in the intimacy of the Playhouse will be something quietly electrifying – a fitting celebration for her return to the Opera House.”
